Filed under: iPhone , iPod touch You’ve upgraded your iPhone to iOS 4 , and you’re anxious to play with all sorts of new and wonderful features. Before you do that, take a few minutes to make sure everything is working as expected. Here’s a list of things to confirm. They aren’t in any particular order, and not all of them will apply to everyone, but some of them will, especially if you have “restored” your iPhone. 1. Launch the phone app and go to the voicemail tab
Filed under: iPhone A number of iOS 4-compatible apps are being distributed today, and now Apple’s iBooks application has gone universal as promised . The new version offers book syncing between the iPhone or iPod touch and the iPad , plus bookmark syncing (via iTunes) and a free copy of Winnie the Pooh . The UI has a few subtle differences. When viewing the iBookstore from the iPhone, the icons across the bottom are Featured, Charts, Browse, Search and Purchases. On the iPad, they’re Featured, New York Times selections, Top Charts and Purchases. Bookmark synchronization is done via iTunes.
Urban Apps has released a major update to its Ambiance “environment enhancer” app for iPhone and iPod touch devices. Ambiance 3.0 is a complete rewrite of the application to support iOS4 and the coming iPhone 4. First announced on April 8th and promised for a worldwide release on June 21st, Apple’s iOS 4 upgrade was officially released for public consumption earlier today. The fourth major release of Apple’s mobile device operating system has also been given a new name: iOS, representative of its place on Apple’s entire suite of mobile devices and not merely the iPhone. Despite this, however, today’s release only encompasses Apple’s…
Filed under: iPod Family Way back two or three years ago, we first heard about some HD radios coming out that would allow for iTunes tagging of songs for later purchase. I guess Apple thought that was a mighty nifty idea, as they later gave similar capability to the latest iPod nano, and the company has recently filed for a patent that integrates HD radio right into future iPhones and iPods . Unlike with traditional FM radio, HD radio transmits with it information on the song, artist and album you’re listening to. The most recent iPod nano has a song tagging feature for its built-in, traditional FM receiver, though it relies on later syncing the device with iTunes to make sense of what song you tagged. With HD radio capabilities built into an iPhone or iPod, theoretically you could set your device to search for a particular song title via HD radio information.
Filed under: iPad My wife and I are currently cruising the Baltic aboard the Disney Magic . Of course, two things we couldn’t leave at home were our iPhones and iPads. One thing we found immediately was that many of the crew members and passengers on the Magic had never seen an iPad, and they were fascinated with the device. As an example, Burak, the manager of one of the three restaurants on the ship, had me demo the iPad to his wife. She is on the ship for a few weeks as a guest of the cruise line, and he needed her to “approve” his planned purchase of an iPad. After a short demo of Photos, a few games, and iWork, Burak’s wife gave his purchase the thumbs-up. I can now count the restaurant manager as a good friend.
Apple won’t reveal the complete tech specs of the iPhone and iPad. No one knows how many RAMs they have unless you tear down the products. Previous tear down by iFixit of iPhone 4 suggest that it has 256MB RAM only. Today, a new source said the iPhone 4 should have 512MB RAM. This matches with the news report by Digitimes in May. One of the WWDC sessions has also confirmed that.
ThinkLink’s FaceCash mobile payment system has debuted several apps (for BlackBerry, iPhone , and Android devices) which allow you to pay for things merely by scanning your phone — and showing off the attached photo to confirm it is, in fact, your own money that you’re spending. You sign up, link your FaceCash account to your personal checking and savings account, and you’re good to go with participating merchants. The apps can also store credit card numbers and banking information (perfect for when you lose your phone during a night of heavy partying), making it easier to leave your wallet or purse behind… or so they say. Sadly, FaceCash currently only has merchants in California, and really, who wants to live there? FaceCash mobile payment apps are like real money, only with your face on it instead of someone smart originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 17:23:00 EDT
Apple has traditionally been — how shall we put it — cagey with revealing memory and CPU specifics of its mobile devices, but MacRumors is today reporting its discovery that the fourth-gen iPhone’s RAM apportionment will be a very healthy 512MB. We’ve heard similar rumblings from reliable sources of our own. What it means is that iPhone 4 users can look forward to not only the same processor (though potentially at a lower speed) as their iPad compatriots, but also double the memory allowance. Of course, this will hardly be the first handset to offer half a gig for the OS to dance inside, but at least Apple’s keeping up with the times. Wouldn’t wanna disappoint all those pre-orderers now, would we?
Apple has posted a new Knowledge Base document revealing that iBooks 1.1 and iTunes 9.2 now support the sync of iTunes Digital Booklets to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. According to the document, users simply need to select the desired iTunes Digital Booklet from the Music library, click Get Info, change the Media type to Book, and hit okay. The Digital Booklet will then be moved to the Book library, and can be synced like any other book. Apple…
